Due to past migration by Italian and Portugese citizens and more recently, globalisation, Italian citizenship has become highly sought after. Italian citizenship is granted either by birth or by blood (descendants) as stated in the Italian Constitution

Italians started travelling during the 19th and 20th century trying to escape the hardship of life in Europe, whether running from starvation or simply seeking a safe heaven or a better place to live.

Brazil and Argentina were two of the migrating Italians favourite destinations. In Brazil, they were employed in coffee plantation camps, in many cases used as a replacement for the then recently freed black slaves. The crisis of 1929 was one of the turning points for Italian immigrants as it allowed them to purchase part of the lands that were being used to exploit them as cheap labour. The banks, in turn, sought to reduce their credit exposure by selling cheap land to whoever could pay for it.

Soon after the economic downturn, many former Italian labourers had become middle class citizens – in some cases rich land owners – who were in a position not only to transfer wealth to their descendants, but also Italian citizenship.

In order to access the benefits of Italian citizenship, it is essential to gather all relevant documents to prove that individuals may be descendants of an Italian citizen; such a process can be achieved by gathering Birth Certificates or in the case of foreign nationals married to Italian citizens, Marriage Certificates. This process can take place in Italy, should that be required, or in some cases in Brazil, where some of the documents may be obtained through the appropriate channels.
